NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER OCT. 1-5

IOWA TEST OF BASIC SKILLS- We will be taking a section of the test every morning this week. Please remember to get to bed early, eat a good breakfast, and come to school relaxed and ready to do your very best!

SNACKS FOR TESTING- Thanks so much to the people who have already sent in snacks and surprises. The children (and teacher) have really enjoyed them. We are going to continue all this week with special snacks. Check the “apple” sheet for your assingned day.

HOMEWORK- We will not be having homework (not much anyway) this week. I won’t be checking agendas either. We are having a low stress week

SCHOOL SPIRIT AWARD- We won the beautiful mustang horseshoe, and all of the students won a bookmark with a neat horseshoe pin. Thanks for wearing your sports team jerseys! We had 100% participation!!!!

DISCOUNT CARDS- Please return or pay for your discount cards. This is our major fundraiser for the year.

FIELD TRIP- Students brought home permission slips last Thursday for our 5 part Parks and Recreation Field Trips. Please sign and return both permission forms along with $20. That payment covers all 5 trips. Remember to check at the bottom of the form if you want a school lunch or if you are bringing a lunch from home.

MYSTERY READER- Mrs. Vollbracht did a great job as our Mystery Reader. Thanks for sharing books with us.

STAMPEDE TO READ- Continue to read, read, read! Remember, each star counts for 20 minutes of reading. Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Vollbract, and Mrs. Hendricks are doing a great job!

READING- Bring your library book to school each day. We will be working on our book reports in class this week. How many have you taken this nine weeks?

ENGLISH- Subjects and predicates

WRITING- Edit “Bag Writing” / Mustang Mail

MATH- Two more weeks with the Place Value and Number Sense Unit. Hardest concepts are subtraction with regrouping, making a schedule using various times, and elapsed time. Any extra help at home would be appreciated. / Timed test on Wednesday

SCIENCE- Fossils and types of rocks / Bring an item for fossil making on Wednesday. Mrs. Huebener will explain this more in class. She said the earth models looked great!

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER SEPT. 24-28

STANDARDIZED TESTING- All third grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) on Wednesday morning and on Thursday morning of this week. Please make sure that your child has at least two #2 pencils with good erasers. They can NOT use mechanical pencils on the test. Next week, Oct. 1-5, we will be taking the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). A different subject area will be administered each day. Remember to get to bed early, eat a good breakfast, and most importantly…relax and give your best effort!

SPECIAL SNACKS FOR TESTING- A special snack letter was sent home with every child last Thursday. (apples around the edges) Please mark your date on the calendar and send in the appropriate snack that day. Some students have a * beside their names because they are being asked to send in a snack again. If that is a problem, please let me know. The students really enjoy this and look forward to the special snacks each day. Please keep in mind that we have some students with peanut allergies. (If your child does have special needs, you might want to provide your own snack those days.)

PARENT HELPERS- If you are scheduled to help Wednesday or Thursday of this week, please take the day off We are not allowed to have parents in our rooms before 10:30 during testing. If you are scheduled for the following week on any day, take the day off again In other words, I can’t have parent helpers during testing. If I need any special projects completed, I’ll send out an e-mail. Thanks so much for all that you do for us every week!!!!!!

MYSTERY READER- Many thanks to Mrs. Evans for sharing some great books with the students. We are looking forward to our new Mystery Reader this Friday.

DISCOUNT CARDS- Please try to sell the discount cards that your children brought home. They are a great value, and the money will really help our school.

FORD ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN UP DAY- We had one this past weekend. The next one is this coming Saturday, Sept. 29, from 10:00-12:00.

MOVIE NIGHT IN THE GARDEN- Mark your calendar for Friday, October 5th- More details later.

PICTURE RETAKES- Students who were not happy with their pictures can get retakes on Tuesday, Sept. 25th.

BOOK REPORT- All students should have checked out a fiction chapter book last Monday. The book should have been approved by me. Students need to be reading it every night AND bringing it to school every day. The books need to be completed by Sunday, Sept. 29th. We will start working on the book report at school on Monday, October 1st.

SCIENCE- Layers of the earth models are due on Tuesday. The test over the layers of the earth will be on Wednesday

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER SEPT. 17-21

LANDFORM MAPS- The children did a GREAT job on the landform maps. Everyone made an E+ on the oral test. Many thanks to all of the parents who came in to help: Mr. Gilreath, Mrs. Murphy, Mrs. Vollbracht, Mrs. Hendricks, Mrs. Evans, and Mrs. Visage. We couldn’t have done it without you!

EARLY RELASE DAY- Students will be dismissed at 12:00 this Wednesday, Sept. 19th.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES-We have completed our map unit, so the students will now start a science unit with Mrs. Huebener for 4 weeks.

LIBRARY- Students need to bring library books to school tomorrow. They will have an opportunity to take AR tests in the media center and a chance to check out new books.

ACCELERATED READER-Important reminder…We don’t have a set AR goal this first nine weeks, but all students are expected to read AR books and to take AR tests. Please ask your child how he/she is doing.
The STAR test score was written on the 4 ½ week progress report. That is a good indicator of a good AR range…up or down a few points.

STAMPEDE TO READ- Students will be bringing home information about Stampede to Read tonight. Many thanks to Mrs. Vollbracht, Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. Hendricks for helping with this.

MYSTERY READERS- We’ve had some wonderful mystery readers over the past few weeks. Thank you to Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Mufti for sharing books with us.

PRIDE IN WORK- Please encourage your child to do his/her neatest work at all times.

ENGLISH-Students are bringing home information today about a “Bag” project that is due this Wednesday. We will use the bags and the items for a writing assignment.

READING- We will continue with our discussion of traditional literature,folktales, and fables. Our story this week comes from Junior Great Books. It is called “Ooka and the Honest Thief”. We will be having discussions and writing assignments throughout the week that go with this story. / Read at least 15 minutes 4 nights a week

MATH- All students should be studying and learning their multiplication facts. Students can use flashcards, computer games, CD’s or anything else that helps reinforce the facts. / Students are going to different teachers for the rest of the math unit./ Elapsed time is a difficult concept that all of the students need to review at home. Ask your child everyday questions about this. Example: If I start preparing supper at 5:30 and it takes 45 minutes for it to cook, what time will be eat? If you have to be at soccer practice at 4:00 and it takes 35 minutes to get there, what time do we need to leave the house? / Timed test on Wednesday

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER SEPT. 10-14

OPEN HOUSE- Thank you for attending Open House last Thursday. I hope I was able to answer some questions and to give you an overview of my goals and expectations for your children. The packet that was given out Thursday night has some good information. Please read over it when you have time. I am so excited about working with this group of students and parents!

ACCELERATED READER- Students should be reading AR books and taking tests. We don’t have an official goal for this first nine weeks, but I do expect the students to be reading and taking tests. Please ask your child how he/she is doing.

READING LOG- Everyone should be reading at least 15 minutes, 4 out of 7 nights a week. That is not enough! Please encourage your child to read on a nightly basis. All third grade students must pass the Reading section of the CRCT in order to move on to the fourth grade. Reading logs are due every Monday.

ABSENT- I have to go to a meeting on Thursday, so I won’t be at school. I will return any phone calls or e-mails on Friday.

LANDFORM PROJECT- Save that pizza box!! Information was sent home Friday about our upcoming landform project. Students should bring the salt/dough map to school next Monday, Sept. 17th. We will paint and label the maps at school. I had asked for parent volunteers at Open House. If you would like to help with the project next Monday from 8:30-9:30, please let me know.

MATH COMPACTING- A letter is coming home today with the name of your child’s math teacher for the next five weeks. Please sign and return the letter.

TASTE OF KENNESAW- Have you ever been? Bring the whole family for great food and fun. The festivities run from 11- 7 this coming Saturday, Sept. 15th at the Kennesaw Depot.

SOLDIER PEN PAL- If you have been at Ford for a while, you might remember the very special visit from Patrick Faughnan, a very special soldier. He was a pen pal for my class two years ago. He is back in Irag, and our class will be pen pals with him again. We will write our first letters to him on 9-11. We will also be putting care packages together to send to him periodically. His mother said that he really needs AT&T International Phone Cards. If you are out shopping, please pick one up for Patrick .We will compile a list of other needs as well. Please keep all of our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers.

SOCIAL STUDIES-We will be discussing landforms all week and making landform cards/ Written test on Thursday / Map project due on Monday/ This will be the end of the 4 week map skills unit / Science will start with Mrs. Huebener next week.

MATH- We will continue reviewing place value and number sense / New topics will include addition and subtraction with regrouping/ elapsed time/ making schedules / Seven minute timed test on Wednesday

LABOR DAY- I hope you enjoyed your day off!

OPEN HOUSE- Our Open House will be this Thursday, Sept. 6th. It will start at 6:30 in the gym. After a brief meeting, parents will come to the classroom. I look forward to seeing everyone Thursday nightJ

PARENT HELPERS- Many thanks to all of the parents who helped in the classroom this past week: Mrs. Gilreath, Mrs. Loudermilk, Mrs. Hall, Mrs.Vollbracht, and Mr. Finkelstein. We truly appreciate your help!

MY PLACE IN SPACE- All of the students did a GREAT job reciting their place in space. Thanks for working so hard and being prepared.

CONTINENTS AND OCEANS- Our big challenge for this week will be to learn the location and spelling of all of the 7 continents and 4 oceans. The written test will be on Thursday.

ACCELERATED READER- Please remind and encourage your child to read AR books and to take AR tests. We do not have a set goal for the first nine weeks, but I do expect the students to read and to take tests.

X-TRA ACTIVITY and X’S IN THE AGENDA- We will discuss our discipline plan on Thursday night. Just a few reminders in case you can’t come Thursday night: Students are allowed to have 2 X’s every week. We’re human. We all make mistakesJ The week runs from Friday- Thursday . Students start with a clean slate every Friday. If a student receives an X for missing or incomplete work, that work must be completed and turned in the next day. The same goes for signed papers.

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER AUG. 27-31

CLASSROOM NEEDS- Many thanks to all of the parents who have sent in candy, tissues, handsoap, and Lysol wipes. We are fine on all of those for now. I’ll let you know when we are running low.

MEDIA CENTER ORIENTATION- We will have our orientation today, so students will be able to check out library books now. All students should have a chapter book to read at all times.

ACCELERATED READER- Students will not have a set AR goal for the first nine week period. I do expect the students to read AR books and to take tests though. Students should read books that are 3.0 or higher. We will set a definite goal for the second nine week period.

TARGET OPEN HOUSE- There will be an Open House for parents with students in the gifted program on Tuesday from 6:30-7:30.

SCOUT NIGHT- If your child is interested in joining scouts, please attend the meeting on Thursday night from 6:30-8:00.

LABOR DAY- We will not have school next Monday, Sept.3rd.

OPEN HOUSE- We will be having Open House for K,2, and 5 on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. Open House for 1,3, and 4 will be on Thursday, Sept. 6th.
