NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER FEB. 25-29

ABSENT- I will be back at school on Tuesday. I hope everything is going well

ART LESSON- Many thanks to Erin O’Reilly’s mother for our art lesson.

EARLY RELEASE- Mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 4th. Students will be dismissed at 12:20.

ACCELERATED READER- Remember, we are more than half way through the nine week period. Make sure you have a plan to earn 12 points by Friday, March 14th.

LITERATURE CIRCLE BOOKS- All literature circle books (Shiloh or The Best School Year Ever) should be finished by Friday and students should take an AR test over the book.

SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- Core Words- five, himself, usually, money, seen Bonus Words- mountain region, Brasstown Bald, Blue Ridge, Appalachian Range, habitat, Piedmont, ecosystem, environment, populated / Cloze Review on Thursday / consonant fractions / ABC order / adding suffixes

ENGLISH- multiple meanings/ pronouns / summarizing / letter writing

READING- “City Green” / comprehension test on Thursday / Activities to go along with the story / Finish Literature Circle book / Author visit

WRITING- Continue with cursive handwriting / Persuasive writing

MATH- Continue learning how to measure to the nearest inch, ½ inch , and ¼ inch. The students need LOTS of one on one help with this. Please supervise math homework. / Finish customary system and introduce metrics / Continue to review basic math facts / problem solving

SCIENCE- Study environments and changes in ecosystems / Earth lesson with Mr. Contreras on Wednesday

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER FEB. 11-13

THANK YOU! I came to school today feeling kind of “puny” and then Morgan handed me an envelope with two gift cards to La Cocina! That helped me feel better My family and I love to eat there! I also went shopping this weekend and used the money that I got from my Christmas tree. I combined that money with some of my birthday money and I bought a new bakers rack for my kitchen. I am so excited. This class is SO SPECIAL to me, so I wanted to get something that would always remind me of them.

WRITING ASSESSMENT- The students completed the final writing assessment this morning. It will be scored and compared to the pre-assessment on the same topic.

VALENTINE’S DAY- Students will be able to exchange Valentines on Thursday, February 14th. We will be making folders at school to hold the Valentines. A list of all of the students in the class will be coming home today.

PIE DAY-This Thursday will be Pie Day in our class! We will use the skills we have learned in math to make fudge pies. Your child will be bringing home a sheet today asking for a certain ingredient/item to send in for Pie Day. Please sign the letter and return it tomorrow. Items can be sent in on or before Thursday, February 14th.

YEARBOOKS- Students can still order a yearbook until February 22nd.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL DANCE- Remember to mark your calendars for the school dance at Durham Middle School on Friday, February 22nd.

NO SCHOOL- Students do not have to come to school on Monday, February 18th or Tuesday, February 19th.

SPELLING- Core Words- learn, point, city, play, toward Bonus Words- executive branch, legislative branch, judicial branch, House of Representatives, Senate, Supreme Court, president / Cloze Review on Thursday

READING- We will continue with modified Literature Circles this week. Students are required to read at least one chapter a night. Students don’t have a specific job. If they come across a word they don’t know or a passage they think is meaningful to the chapter, they should mark it or write down the page number. / Remember, we are more than half way through the nine week period. The AR goal for this nine weeks is 12 points. As of today, your child has _______out of 12 AR points. / Read Snowflake Bentley / Correct Scholastic News Reading Test

VOCABULARY- Unit 5 words / Test on Wednesday

SOCIAL STUDIES- Rights and Privileges / Three branches of government

SCIENCE- Begin new unit with Mrs. Huebener on Tuesday.

ENGLISH- Morning work packet / Writing using vocabulary words

MATH- Continue discussing fractions and decimals / Test over fractions and decimals on Wednesday / Thursday = PIE DAY!!!

PICTURE DAY- Students will have pictures taken tomorrow. Please send in your money tomorrow for individual and class pictures.

GEORGIA-OLOGY- We will have another High Touch High Tech inschool field trip tomorrow. It will cover many of our Georgia standards.

ACCELERATED READER- We are half way through the 9 week period. Are you doing well with your AR goal? As of today you have ______out of 12 points.

DONATIONS FOR BROWN ELEMENTARY- We will continue to accept donations for Brown Elementary until Thursday of this week. We are still in need of glue sticks, masking tape, and clear tape. Many thanks to all of the families who have already made dontations.

EARLY RELEASE DAY/HAT DAY- Students will be dismissed at 12:20 this Wednesday. They can bring a $1.00 donation for Relay For Life and wear their favorite hat.

CURRICULUM NIGHT- Thursday, Feb. 7th from 6:00-7:30. Please come and join us for a wonderful night. Students and parents can visit all of the different rooms and participate in various activities. (If you signed up for the spaghetti dinner, it starts at 5:30)

VALENTINE’S DAY- Students will be allowed to exchange Valentines next Thursday. We will make folders at school to hold the Valentines. I will copy a class list on the back of this newsletter. Please include EVERY student if you choose to participate.

NO SCHOOL- Students will not have school on Monday, Feb. 18 or Tuesday, Feb. 19th- Enjoy your time off!

MATH- Continue studying fractions and decimals / Fraction Town assignment will be given on Wednesday. It will be due on Friday

SOCIAL STUDIES- Levels of government / Watch video made of Mayor Allgood / Please discuss the various presidential candidates and their positions with your child at home. / Send in a picture of your favorite candidate and give reasons why he/she is your favorite- due on Thursday
