NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER JAN. 22-25

CONFERENCE WEEK-I’m looking forward to meeting with everyone this week. Remember, students will be dismissed at 12:20 all this week and MONDAY of next week also.

MLK DAY- I hope you enjoyed your day off. Did you get to play in the snow?

100th DAY- Our one hundredth day of school is Wednesday, January 23rd. Please send in 100 small food items to go in our big “100the Day Trail Mix”. Remember to wash your hands before you count your items into your baggie Please do not send any nuts. We have two students with mild peanut allergies.

BIOGRAPHY BLAB- Students should be working on their notecards in class each day and at home each night. Be ready for your interview on Thursday, January 25th. Refer to all of the papers I gave you last week to prepare for the interview.

SPIRIT DAY- This Friday, students are asked to dress as a faculty member. This should be interesting

SIX FLAGS READING- Students were given information on the Six Flags Reading Program last week. Forms are due on February 22nd.

TIMED TESTS- We will be taking the 7 minute timed test on Wednesday.
Congratulations to Cole Finkelstein! He is our newest Math Buster!

ACCELERATED READER- Students need to have 12 points by the end of the nine week period. Aydan Mufti and Kyle Bender have gotten off to a great start this nine weeks!! Don’t wait until the last minute. Start earning points NOW!

SUBJECT MATTER

SPELLING- We will not have a Sitton Spelling test this week. Students should be studying their “tab” words in the back of their spelling composition book instead. These are words that the students have misspelled on assignments or tests this year.

MATH- Fractions / Timed test on Wednesday / Real Deal fish test every other day

READING- 7 X 9 = Trouble / Biography Blab on Thursday!!! I can’t wait to meet all of the famous people!

VOCABULARY- Unit 4

WRITING- Cursive j,p,a,d,c,n,m

SOCIAL STUDIES- We will be watching various videos this week to kick off our government and citizenship unit

THANK YOU!!!!! You made my birthday so special! John and I really enjoyed our candlelight lunch with the fancy china and the beautiful roses. I’m going to save my Kohl’s gift card for a new spring outfit. I’m excited about using my movie passes. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful group of students and parents. You all are the best!!!!

BIOGRAPHY BOOK- Make sure you have finished reading your biography book by this Thursday. We will discuss on Thursday what you will need to do to prepare for your “report” on your book.

TARGET- The new Target day will be FRIDAY again. Therefore, Xtra Activity will be on Thursdays and Spelling Cloze Reviews will be on Thursdays again.

ACCELERATED READER- All students must get 12 AR points this nine weeks. Do not wait until the last minute to get started. Happy Reading!

MULTIPLICATION FISH TESTS- We will be on a two day rotation until everyone passes the twelves tables. The first day will be In Order and the second day will be the Real Deal. Students who have already passed the twelves will be randomly assigned a table on the In Order day. Papers must be signed and corrected on a Real Deal day.

ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD TRIP- We will be having an in-school field trip this Thursday.

CONFERENCE WEEK- Remember, students will be dismissed at 12:20 every day next week and on Monday the following week. I’m looking forward to meeting with everyone during conference week.

NO SCHOOL- We will not have school next Monday, January 21st in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

CURRICULUM NIGHT- Mark your calendars for Thursday, February 7th. Relay for Life will be sponsoring a spaghetti dinner from 5:30-6:30. Then families can go to the different areas in the building to try various activities. More information will be forthcoming.

READING- Compare and contrast The Talking Eggs to Mother of the Waters / We will be doing many activities to go along with the Jr. Great Books story. / Time For Kids / Scholastic News Reading Comprehension Test / Work on biography book report

WRITING- We have officially started cursive handwriting! YEAH! I have asked the students NOT to write in cursive until we have introduced all of the letters.

ENGLISH- Discuss the use of encyclopedias / Summary writing / Discuss writing folder

MATH- Introduce fractions / 7 Minute Timed Test on Wednesday / Multiplication Fish Tests every day / Buy a composition book for The Problematic Community. We need these ASAP!!!

SOCIAL STUDIES- Begin citizenship and government

WELCOME BACK! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. I’m looking forward to a great 2008.

COMPOSITION BOOK- Please buy a new composition book by next Monday. We will be starting a new program called…The Problematic Community. It should help the students with problem solving in every day life situations.

CONFERENCES- Conference letters will be coming home today. Please sign and return as soon as possible. If you can’t come on the assigned day and time, please list an alternative date that will work better for you. Conferences will be held Jan. 22-28. Students will be dismissed at 12:20 those days. Report cards will be handed out during conferences.

STUDENT PAYMENT RECORD- Students will receive a letter showing the amount of money spent here at school for field trips, etc.

VISITING ILLUSTRATOR- Information was sent home on paper and via e-mail about purchasing books illustrated by Michael P. White. He will be at school on Wednesday to talk to the children and to show his talents.

NO SCHOOL- Students will not have school on Monday, January 21st.

ACCELERATED READER- It’s a brand new nine week period. Students will have an AR goal of 12 points this nine weeks. Please have your child start early!!! Remember, students should not be reading books that are less than 3.0. Happy reading!

BIOGRAPHY BOOKS- Students will be checking out biography books from the library today. They should be reading them every night this week and next week for homework. The book should be completed by the end of next week. I will give instructions about the “report” next week.

TARGET- Our new target day is Thursday. Remember to bring your things for Target on Thursday instead of Friday. / Open House for parents of new target students will be held this Thursday from 6:30-7:30 in the media center.

SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING- Core Words- sure, knew, it’s, try, told Bonus Words- opportunity cost, scarcity, price influence, increase, supply, demand, decrease, goods, services / Cloze Review on Friday / Sitton Spelling Achievement test will be given this week- not something to study for…just an evaluation to see if the core words that have already been presented have been mastered./ Work on contractions-differences between let’s and lets and its and it’s

READING- We will read the biography, Jerry Pinkney, Achiever of Dreams . A comprehension test will be given on Friday. / Check out and read biography books from the library.

WRITING- Prewriting assessment will be given on Friday of this week. Students will be given a topic. They will have 30-60 minutes for brainstorming and drafting. Then they will be given 60 more minutes for revising, editing, and final draft. / Discuss previous writings…What did you do well? What do you need to work on? / Write winter poems

MATH- Work on problem solving / Review multiplication and division/ Take 7 minute timed tests on Wednesday / Fish tests will be given in a modified version until everyone passes the twelves tables. One day will be in order and the next day will be the Real Deal.

SOCIAL STUDIES- We will be discussing supply and demand, goods and services, and how prices affect buying / review map skills
