Newsletter Aug. 23-27

NEWSLETTER MRS. TURNER AUG. 23-27
LETTERS FROM PARENTS-Many thanks to all of the parents who have had chance to write me a letter about your child. They are very informative and helpful
EARLY RELEASE DAY- Students will be dismissed at 12:15 on Wednesday, August 25th.
TROPICAL CLOTHING- Wear tropical clothing this Thursday for Xtra Activity. We will be tasting tropical fruits from LA ISLA and doing a neat art project.
MYSTERY READER- Many thanks to Mrs. McCullough and Mrs. Davis for being our first two mystery readers.
CLASSROOM HELPERS AND MYSTERY READERS- Many thanks to Mrs. Davis for volunteering to make our class calendar. Classroom helpers and mystery readers for the month of August have been sent out already. Let me know if you did not receive a calendar. Mrs. McElhannon has volunteered to call and remind Mystery Readers the weekend before you come in on Monday.
OPEN HOUSE- Please plan to attend Open House on Tuesday, August 31 for K, 2, & 4…and Thursday, Sept. 2 for 1, 3, & 5. The program starts at 6:30 in the gym. We will be sharing lots of valuable information that night!
NO SCHOOL- Students will not have school on Monday, September 6th
FALL BREAK- Students will not have school from Sept. 20-24.
SUBJECT MATTER
SPELLING-We will be working on long I spelled “igh” and “y”, long o spelled “ow”, long a spelled “ay” and long u spelled “ew”. An assessment will be given on Thursday
ENGLISH- Common nouns and proper nouns will be our main topic of discussion this week. We will also review the 4 types of sentences.
READING- We will be reading ISLA this week. It is a fantasy story about a girl and her grandmother. Vocabulary and comprehension assessments will be given during the week. Continue to read at least 4 times during the week for at least 15 minutes. .. More would be appreciated! Reading logs will be checked every Monday.
MATH- The relative size of digits will be discussed this week. We will also introduce estimating and rounding. The seven minute timed test will be given on Wednesday. Please help your child prepare for this test. If you read this, please write the name of the test your child will be taking on Wednesday…eg.addition, subtraction, or multiplication.
SOCIAL STUDIES-Students will be labeling and discussing the seven continents and five oceans…parents, did you know about the Southern Ocean? We will also be practicing “Our Place in Space”. Students should be able to say their place in space orally to me by Thursday. They should also be able to label the continents and oceans on a world map.
